LOCUS
Definition:locus
noun ( pl. loci )• a particular position, point, or place
• the effective or perceived location of something abstractORIGIN early 18th cent.: from Latin, ‘place.’The study of the uncanny is at the core of my work. It is a feeling built around uncertainty, a conflict of emotions, trapped between the security of familiarity and the fear of the unknown.I find this feeling particularly apparent when walking amongst the red brick estates of suburbia. Each home a solitary bubble; the lives within hidden from sight. So many people living in close proximity completely isolated from one another. The dark distorting our perception of the mundane setting in which so many of us lead our lives. Each painting is an attempt to capture that moment of time, caught in the imperceptible shift between cosiness and dread.

I'm Not A Pigeon,
I'm A Flocking Rock Dove!
It seems to me that Pigeons are a rather put upon species. They are one of our most common feathered friends here in Britain, but is it simply their prolific nature that causes such regular discrimination? Our ever increasing disconnect from the natural world seems to have led us to a point where many people actively hate what could be considered one of our country’s most interesting, versatile, and beautiful indigenous species. On the other hand, the dove has been emblematic throughout the history of ours and many other cultures; one might say it is a very popular bird. So I find it rather interesting that the feral pigeon is in fact a dove or to be more precise a ‘Rock Dove’. Having moved inland, been domesticated, escaped and interbred it is now a rather multi-cultural species within it’s genus.Could our tendency to talk dispassionately about this species be reflective of our inclination to discriminate against each other based on such trivial notions as size, age, shape, colour and gender?Working from my own photography, I paint these fascinating creatures with the hope of capturing each bird’s rich personality and wonderful colouring. Every bird is contained within it’s own canvas providing a space in which it can be considered as an individual with it’s own merits. So perhaps next time you witness a pigeon strutting about in it’s finery like a faded aristocratic down and out, it may look at you indignantly, well it’s thinking “I’m not a pigeon, I’m a fucking Rock Dove!”.

Space & Centre
Space & Centre is a collection of 13 collaborative works by myself and poet David Page, portraying the many fragmented images of Birmingham's unseen architecture, forgotten passageways and transient spaces. The collection represents an urban exploration of the city, documenting both place and 'non place', linking destination with journey and providing a psycho-geographic record of the everyday.Space & Centre endeavours to reconcile our notions of place and identity within the 21st century city and suggests a mediation between the space we inhabit and the space that we create.By mapping the physical environment, through painting and poetry, a 'new' space is formed, a space to consider the connection between the real and the imagined, between place and 'non place', between self and Other.

About

Born and raised in Redditch, UK. I studied Fine Art in Bath focusing primarily on painting and photography. It was here that I developed a fascination with the uncanny and discovered what lay behind my interest in all things suburban. Having lived in Birmingham for nearly 10 years I finally escaped, with my partner and son, to a tiny village near Betws y Coed in Snowdonia, North Wales. Now I draw inspiration from the breathtaking landscape and abundant nature.
